Renaissance Irish Flags – A Review

I’ve received some Irish flags for review from Flags of War. The range covers from the Desmond Rebellion to the Confederation of Kilkenny. In fact, some of these flags would be appropriate for the War of Three Kings

Let’s begin with the Nine Years War.  As you might expect we get the big two O’Neill and O’Donnell.  Pleasingly, Flags of War have gone further.  You can have flags for Rory Og O’More, Fiach and Felim O’Byrne and the Desmonds.  I wouldn’t hesitate to use any of them.

There are also some harp banners on the traditional blue background. Two types of Irish cross are available, St Patrick’s saltire and the one used by Maguire of Fermanagh who commanded the Irish cavalry. We have evidence that both were used in the Nine Years War.

We can also have the papal banner brought to John of Desmond by the English cleric Dr. Nicholas Sanders.  So far as I know that flag was never captured and so might have got another outing in the Nine Years War.  I certainly intend to use it with my Munster contingent alongside St. Patrick’s saltire and the Desmond banner.

The artwork and production values of the flags is very good.  Certainly, at the top of the paper flag market.  Is anything missing?  Well, I think a flag for O’Sullivan Beare would be worth adding and perhaps a couple of Redshank flags.  The choice for the latter is pretty wide with lots of Campbell and McDonald variants before we even consider the smaller clans.

So, if you want some flags for your Renaissance Irish troops Flags of War can oblige for a reasonable price. Here is a link so you can have a look for yourself.
