Jacobite Cavalry and Dragoons

I have a fair few Jacobite Cavalry. Some units were missing.  I thought I’d use up some of the figures left over from the great rebasing to provide the absent cavaliers.

Tyrconnell’s Horse second squadron.  Figures from Essex. As befits their proprietor’s key position in providing Jacobite logistics they wear redcoats.

Sutherland’s Horse wearing French supplied uniform coats.  Uniformity could be patchy in the Jacobite Army.  Figures from Irregular.

The Jacobite Dragoons were solid troops.  They could be deployed on at full strength on foot where their firelocks provided advantage.  At other times they would happily charge mounted.

Here are Dongan’s, Clare’s and O’Neill’s Dragoons.  All mounted and on foot.

Dongan’s above and below.

Clare's next.

Above mounted and on foot below.

Both squadrons of O’Neill’s Dragoons. First squadron mounted.

On foot with horse holders.

Deployed as infantry.

Second squadron mounted

Second squadron deployed as infantry.

I intend doing another squadron of Galmoy's Horse and then my Jacobites are complete.  Next, we will see some multi purpose League of Augsburg troops.  Horse, Dragoons and Foot.  Here is a pic' of the Horse to be going on with.

More soon.

More League of Augsburg 15mm

As a result of the Great Rebasing sundry soldiers of my League of Augsburg collection were rendered unitless  I knew I’d get round to doing something with them eventually.  Their time has now come.  A squadron of the Dutch Gardes du Corps above.

A Squadron of Oxford’s Horse from Essex above.  The Friesland Garde below.

One of the things I enjoy about Beneath the Lily Banners (BLB) is that period detail abounds throughout the rules.

Here we have a Master Gunner ready to improve artillery performance.

When assaulting works or buildings attaching a unit of pioneers to your storming party improves the chance of success.  They can break the perimeter. Otherwise, you can get them to make gabions.  BLB allows a unit of pioneers per 2 brigades

I’m currently painting units of Dragoons mounted and foot.   Handily, some of them will also serve as the sort of local levies you might find in the various upheavals from 1688 onwards.

Speaking of which I'm just finishing of a couple of cavalry units.  Local gentry and their better off tenants the like of which rose for Monmouth or James or William. Their flags are suitably non specific. You will see them all shortly.

Here is a unit of Scythe Men, could be Monmouth's men or indeed Jacobites.

I intend to give all of these Scythe units fairly plain flags so they can represent a wide range of newly raised bodies of men.

As a youth I mowed with a scythe.  Scythes are terrifying things, heavy and very sharp.  Once moving they have there own momentum.  Controlling that requires muscle.  A moving scythe blade can cut through flesh and bone with ease.  That is why in my young day experienced mowers often wore thick leather gaiters.  Such a blade mounted on a straight shaft would be a deadly weapon.

League of Augsburg-New Units

I had a quick look at my League of Augsburg Dutch contingent.  Four battalions of infantry and ditto squadrons of cavalry if you count Eppinger’s dragoons.  A bit sparse I thought, though there is also battery of guns.  I have the English too of course.  All the same I felt I was a bit Grand Alliance light for Continental fights. I set to work.

The van Keppel infantry above.  Substitute the centre stand with the colours and they could be Clare’s or Hastings regiments.  Doubtless many others too.  It is part of the appeal of the period.  Figures from Irregular and Essex.

Nassau-Friesland here and I suspect I've made a flag mistake. Figures from Dixon, Irregular and Essex. Shortly to be joined by the van Marquette/van Pallandt infantry.  The latter are on their way from the ever- speedy Irregular Miniatures.

I should say that some of these units will need their pike men added in a separate stand.  This is in hand for all of my period units so equipped.  Not as big a task as it may sound.  I have to buy and paint 2 additional figures to my existing pike men and rebase.

For cavalry I opted to do van Ginkel’s troopers with their distinctive straw-coloured coats.  Many Dutch cavalry units were smallish affairs. These fellows might be getting a second squadron because I like the uniform.

Next, we have two squadrons of van Ittersum’s Horse later known as Aughrim’s Horse.

I’ve added a Danish squadron too.  The Dutch liked to hire Danish troops.

As it stands all this will bring my Dutch contingent up to 7 battalions of Foot, 6 Squadrons of Horse, two of Dragoons and the artillery.

I continue to appreciate Irregular Miniature’s League of Augsburg range.  Most of the figures above are from them.  There are two of Ray's Nine Years War flags above.  The others are all from Kronoskaf.
