Painting the Sun King’s Army

As you can see the French are coming along nicely.  At long last the first battalion of the  Gard Francias are done- Lily Banners and all.  The Gard pike men apparently wore a cuirass and these ones are from Essex.

The second battalion will follow and then one of the Gard Suisse.

Should you be statistically minded two thirds of my French cavalry are now done. Excluding the Maison du Roi of course.  More on them later.  Here they are, regiments la Reine and Royal both of two squadrons.

They will shorty be joined by the Orleans Cavalry , white coats and red facings this time

Nor have I neglected the line infantry.

Regiments Dauphin and Navarre now have their pike men.

They are joined by the Royal Italien, also complete.

I’m very happy with how the brown uniforms came out.  Flags by Not by Appointment again and aren’t they good?.

I have a battery of artillery done too.

In theory I have infantry regiments Greder, Bretagne and Royal Vaisseaux to do and that’s it.  Except, it isn’t.

I also have three French battalions with my Irish Jacobite Army.  One of them, Merode, needs a new coat colour to be right.  So, I’ll do that.  No big deal, except, I can now see I need to refurbish the rest of my Jacobites too.  They were mainly painted 20 years ago and some could do with it.  Expect a further couple of posts on the Jacobites, both Irish and Scots.

Of course, if I’m doing the Jacobites I need to look to the Williamites too.  Grand Alliance will follow in bite sized chunks, probably contingent by contingent.  More French too and did I mention the Ottomans?

I believe the technical term is “mission creep” and it’s a very bad thing.

The catalyst for this strategic collapse was Barry Hilton’s “Every Bullet has it’s Billet”.  It’s full of stuff that is hard to ignore.  If you are interested in the League of Augsburg period get a copy-it won’t disappoint.
