Today’s game was the battle of Mudki with Field of Battle 3. It is a card driven game and we are going to see what happened running through the card decks thrice.
It began with a sustained British bombardment of the Sikh position. All six batteries fired three times causing some distress to the Khalsa infantry. One Sikh battalion was knocked out of position and had to be rallied by its Brigadier. Mostly though the Sikhs were safe behind the sand hills. Feeling chirpy General Gough ordered his cavalry to advance on both flanks.
The Sikh guns responded crippling two of the British batteries. One of them had been intended to support the left flank cavalry.
Gough decided to advance in echelon from left to right along his line. Due to some difficult going Brigadier Macaskill’s Brigade found itself outpaced by Brigadier Sales Brigade who were on better ground.
Sales Brigade were hit in column by the Khalsa guns at short range. The casualties were high and the 80th Foot routed. Sale was killed. Time to shuffle the card decks again.
Both sides dice for initiative. Gough rolls 11 and the Sikhs a 3. That means 8 cards will be turned. Gough opts to go first he wants to crack on. While Macaskill shakes out his columns into line Gough rallies the 80th. The accuracy of the Sikh gunners has been a shock. The entire British infantry, save one brigade, deploy into line.
Macaskill’s Brigade advances and is checked by the Sikh guns. For the first time the Khalsa infantry volleys adding to the Brigade’s woes.
On the right the cavalry engages with the Third Dragoons beating their Sikh equivalents. The Governor General’s Body Guard have a tougher time with the Sikh Lancers.
On the left the Gorchurra put up a spirited resistance but are pushed back by Mactier’s cavalry.
Macaskill’s Brigade are in trouble. Pummelled again by artillery the 80th break and route while the 24th fall back.
On the right the Sikh Lancers break and route.
Gough orders a general advance. Time to shuffle the cards again.
